The "Too Hard Basket": Why Your Gym is Leaving Money on the Table

May 19, 2026

Every time a potential client walks into your gym with a disability, a chronic illness, or just a body that doesn't fit the "fitness model" mould, a little alarm goes off in staff's heads.

You start thinking about the insurance. You start thinking about the equipment. You start worrying about "getting it wrong" and getting sued. And before you know it, you’ve mentally filed that human being into the "Too Hard Basket".

It’s the villain of our industry. It’s the place where opportunity goes to die.

And shocker! It’s also where you’re leaving money on the table.

The "Beautiful People" Tax

The fitness industry is obsessed with the "beautiful people culture". The marketing is all about faster, stronger, shinier, BETTER! HUMAN OPTIMISATION!!

But here’s the problem : that approach is narrow. It’s boring. It's saturated and it’s costing you.

When you only market to the 5% of people who already love the gym, you’re fighting for the same scraps as every other PT on the block. It’s like trying to cook a steak on a cold pan : nothing happens, and everyone ends up disappointed.

By putting everyone else in the "Too Hard Basket", you’re ignoring 20% of the population. That’s 1 in 5 Australians who have a disability.

The Evidence: $43 Billion Reasons to Change

I’m not just talking about being a "good person". (Though, let’s be honest, that should be enough). I’m talking about business. Cold, hard cash.

The research is clear. If we closed the employment participation gap for people with disability, we’d see a $43 billion increase in Australia's GDP over the next decade.

Now, apply that logic to your gym floor.

Leading companies that actually give a toss about inclusion see 28% higher revenue and twice the net income. Why? Because when you’re inclusive, you’re not just helping one person. You’re building a community that is loyal, resilient, and: most importantly: long-term.

People with disability aren't looking for a "6-week shred". They’re looking for a practitioner who understands their body and can help them live a better life. That’s a client for life, not just for January.

The Story: Why This Matters to Me

I’ve seen the "Too Hard Basket" firsthand, with my brother Jackson.

Jackson didn’t want a "special" workout. He didn't want to be an "inspiration". He just wanted to move his body, get stronger, and spend time with me.

But for years, the fitness industry looked at Jackson and saw a liability. They saw a risk. They saw a box they didn't know how to tick.

Watching my brother get sidelined because a PT was too scared to ask a question? That’s why I started WeFlex and it's now why Inclusive-AF exists. We’re here to give you the tools so you never have to say "it's too hard" again.

Winding Up the Clock: The "Boring Basics"

Inclusion isn't about some high-tech "superpower" hack. It’s not about buying a $50,000 piece of equipment that looks like a spaceship.

It’s about the boring basics.

It’s about communication. It’s about understanding human anatomy. It’s about having the confidence to say, "I don't know the answer right now, but we’re going to figure it out together."

Supporting a client with a chronic illness is like winding up an old clock. You have to be precise. You have to be patient. You can’t just force the hands around and hope for the best.

Stop Leaving Money on the Table

If you’re a gym owner or a PT, you’re in the business of changing lives. But you can’t do that if you’re only willing to work with the "easy" clients.

The "Too Hard Basket" is a choice. You can choose to stay scared, or you can choose to get educated.

At Inclusive-AF, we co-design our CPD-accredited courses with people who actually live with these disabilities. No fluff. No jargon. Just evidence-based training that makes you a better, more profitable coach.

Your Move

Are you going to keep staring at that basket, or are you going to tip it out and start doing the work?

The industry is changing. The "beautiful people" era is fading, and the era of real, inclusive fitness is here.

Don't get left behind because you were too busy hedging your bets.

Just go outside, breathe some fresh air, and then get stuck into some training.

Boom!
